How to Get Your Business Into Google's Map Pack in Central Oregon

When someone searches "electrician Bend Oregon" or "pizza Redmond OR," Google typically shows three business listings at the very top — above even the paid ads sometimes, and certainly above the regular blue-link results below. This is Google's Map Pack, and if your business isn't in it, you're invisible to most local searchers.

The Map Pack shows the business name, star rating, reviews, address, hours, and often a phone number. Studies consistently show these three listings capture 40–60% of all clicks for local searches. Everything below them fights over what's left.

Step 1: Claim and Complete Your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) — formerly Google My Business — is the single most important factor for Map Pack rankings. If you haven't claimed yours yet, go to business.google.com and do that now.

Once claimed, completion matters enormously:

  • Business name: Use your real business name. Don't keyword-stuff it ("Best Plumber Bend Oregon LLC") — Google will penalize you.
  • Category: Choose your primary category carefully — it's one of the strongest ranking signals. Add relevant secondary categories too.
  • Description: Write a genuine 750-character description that includes your city, services, and what makes you different.
  • Photos: Upload at least 10–15 real photos of your work, team, and location. Profiles with photos get 42% more direction requests.
  • Hours: Keep them current, including holiday hours. Google surfaces businesses that are open for "open now" searches.
  • Services: Add all your services with descriptions. This feeds into which searches you appear for.

Step 2: Be Consistent Everywhere (NAP Consistency)

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google cross-references your GBP information against dozens of other websites — Yelp, BBB, Facebook, Yellow Pages, local directories — to verify your business is legitimate.

If your address is listed as "574 SW 4th St" on your website, "574 Southwest Fourth Street" on Yelp, and "574 SW 4th Street Suite A" on Facebook, that inconsistency weakens your local SEO. Audit your listings and make the NAP identical everywhere.

Step 3: Get Reviews — Consistently

Star rating and review count are major Map Pack ranking factors. But here's what most business owners get wrong: Google cares more about recency than raw count.

A business with 12 reviews in the past six months will often outrank a competitor with 80 reviews — all from two years ago. Build a simple system: after every job, send a follow-up text with a direct link to your Google review page. Train your team to ask. Add a QR code to receipts or business cards. Don't buy reviews — Google detects them and the penalties are severe.

Step 4: Build Local Citations

Citations are mentions of your business NAP on other websites. For Central Oregon businesses, prioritize:

  • Yelp, BBB, Angi, HomeAdvisor (if applicable)
  • Madras Chamber of Commerce, Bend Chamber, Redmond Chamber, Crook County Chamber
  • Facebook Business Page and Apple Maps
  • Industry-specific directories (Houzz for contractors, TripAdvisor for hospitality, etc.)

Step 5: Optimize Your Website for Local Signals

Your website and GBP work together. Google confirms that your website says the same things your GBP says. Make sure your site:

  • Has your full NAP in the footer
  • Mentions your city and service area naturally in the content
  • Has a contact page with an embedded Google Map
  • Has dedicated landing pages if you serve multiple cities

How Long Does It Take?

In smaller markets like Madras, Prineville, or La Pine, a well-optimized GBP with consistent citations can get a business into the Map Pack within 4–8 weeks. In more competitive markets like Bend, expect 3–6 months of consistent effort. The businesses that succeed long-term treat local SEO as an ongoing process — not a one-time setup.
